About us / Toledo & Northwest Ohio

Know Toledo.
Be part of it.

419TOL is a local media and discovery platform connecting you to the stories, places, and events shaping our community.

Explore local news, event calendars, places, and tickets while discovering and supporting the small businesses that help our city thrive.

The reason we’re here

A community is easier to be part of when you know what’s happening.

There’s a lot to know and love about Toledo and Northwest Ohio. Finding it can mean checking a dozen websites, scrolling past an announcement, or hearing about a great event the day after it happened.

We built 419TOL to bring those pieces together. News, community updates, an event calendar, a place directory, and ticketing belong alongside one another because they’re connected in everyday life. A story introduces you to a new local business. The calendar shows you what’s on. A ticket gets you through the door.

Our purpose is to make local information easier to find, understand, and act on, so more people can participate in the life of this region and more of the people doing good work here can be discovered. Helping small businesses be seen, supported, and connected to new customers is central to that purpose.

Meet 419 Pass

More visibility. More local opportunity.

Small businesses deserve to be seen.

Behind an independent shop, restaurant, service business, or neighborhood venue is someone investing in this community. 419TOL exists in part to amplify that work: help people discover who’s here, understand what they offer, and find a reason to walk through the door.

Our directory, local stories, guides, event listings, and promotional opportunities give businesses more ways to reach people who are looking for somewhere to go or something to do. An opening can become a story. A shop’s workshop can become a weekend plan. A neighborhood spot can become someone’s new favorite.

We want that visibility to lead to real support: a visit, a purchase, a ticket sold, a recommendation to a friend, or a customer who comes back. A city’s future is shaped by the people willing to build something in it. Helping small businesses grow is part of how we help Toledo move forward.

A more connected local record

Local news, with the source in view.

As we grow our news coverage, we bring together original content, coverage developed from public records and other source material, direct updates from local organizations, and links to reporting from other outlets. Each serves a different purpose.

Aggregation helps you find information published across the region. When we share another outlet’s reporting, we credit the source and link you to the original work. An organization’s announcement tells you what that organization says; independent reporting asks questions, checks claims, and adds context. Readers should be able to tell the difference.

Reporters, photographers, editors, and local storytellers bring knowledge, relationships, and judgment that matter. We want 419TOL to help more people find their work and give useful local information a longer life beyond a single post or passing headline.

Our city’s future, built together

Built for the Toledo we want to see.

We’re building 419TOL with a vision for Toledo’s future: a city where local businesses can grow, people can find opportunity, and more neighbors take part in shaping what comes next. That means asking where our city is headed, where we want it to go, and how technology can help us get there together.

AI and automation are part of that effort. We use them where they can make local information more useful: helping collect public updates, organize information, connect related events and places, and turn source material into summaries and coverage that are easier to navigate. We see opportunities for these tools to help small businesses reach new audiences and help residents discover more of what’s available to them.

Those tools can expand what a local platform can keep track of. Journalism also takes people who ask the next question, build trust, show up, and understand what a decision means for their neighbors. We see value in technology supporting that work and helping it reach more people.

Our standard is straightforward: credit sources, distinguish announcements from reporting, make meaningful AI involvement clear, and correct mistakes. People remain responsible for what 419TOL publishes, including work produced with technology. An automated summary needs a source; a claim needs evidence; a mistake needs a correction.

Our ambition is to help more people participate in Toledo’s future, and more local businesses help shape it.

For everyone with a stake here

A place for people who care about this place.

419TOL is for residents making weekend plans, newcomers finding their bearings, and visitors getting to know the region. It’s also for the businesses, organizers, artists, community groups, and institutions giving people a reason to show up.

As the platform grows, the formats and tools will evolve. The reason for building it stays the same: help people know Toledo better, support what makes it distinctive, and take part in what happens next.
